End of visa for French Guiana: what you need to know

Starting July 31, 2026, Brazilians will no longer need a visa to enter French Guiana. Understand the rules, required documents, and context.

Fim do visto para a Guiana Francesa: o que você precisa saber

The diplomatic articulation behind the achievement

The end of the visa requirement is the result of intense political and diplomatic articulation that gained strength in recent years. The decisive milestone occurred in May 2025, when French President Emmanuel Macron, during a meeting with President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in Paris, announced the political decision to exempt Brazilians from the land visa. From then on, the technical phase began to make the measure viable, culminating in the signing of the agreement on July 1, 2026, in Brasília, by Foreign Ministers Mauro Vieira (Brazil) and Jean-Noël Barrot (France).

Locally, the Amapá delegation played a fundamental role. Senator Randolfe Rodrigues acted as one of the main articulators between the two countries, accompanying the announcement in Paris and mediating dialogues on border security — a crucial point for the French. Governor Clécio Luís and the President of the Senate, Davi Alcolumbre, were also active voices in defending reciprocity, as French citizens have always been able to enter Brazil without the need for a visa. The increased cooperation in combating illegal mining and drug trafficking at the border was the counterpart that guaranteed mutual trust for the opening of the bridge.

The new border entry rules

The visa exemption applies exclusively to short-term stays, meaning stays that do not exceed 30 days within a 180-day period. The main objective is to facilitate tourism, family visits, and border transit. However, the absence of a visa does not mean entry free of requirements. Brazilian travelers crossing the Binational Bridge or arriving by river to Saint-Georges must, obligatorily, report to the Border Police (PAF) control post, which operates daily, from 7 am to 7 pm, including holidays.

For entry to be authorized, it is necessary to present a valid passport (issued less than 10 years ago, with at least two blank pages and a minimum validity of three months after the return date), in addition to the international yellow fever vaccination certificate. The exemption measure does not apply to people traveling for the purpose of engaging in commercial activities, studying, or establishing residence; for these cases, a long-stay visa remains strictly mandatory and must be requested in advance on the France-Visas platform.

Financial requirements and travel insurance: it's not a mess, it's protection

With the announcement of the exemption, many people on social media questioned whether "in practice anything has changed", as the documentary requirements remain high. The answer is yes, a lot has changed, but it is important to understand that visa exemption does not mean absence of control. To enter any country in the European Union (and French Guiana is French territory), financial proof and travel insurance are universal rules of the Schengen Area. Reciprocity is now real: French citizens enter Brazil without a visa, but also need to prove means of subsistence and insurance.

These requirements do not exist only to hinder entry, but to protect the traveler themselves and the local health system. If you get sick in French Guiana, suffer an accident or, in an extreme case, die, who will bear the hospital costs in euros or the repatriation of the body? Travel insurance of 30,000 euros (which costs on average R$60 to R$100 reais in Brazilian insurance companies) ensures that you will not be left helpless. Likewise, financial proof and hotel reservation (or proof of accommodation) demonstrate that the tourist has the means to support themselves during the trip without burdening the French state.

Practical guide: how to prove everything at the border

In practice, preparing for the trip has become simpler without the bureaucracy of the consulate, but it requires organization. Travel insurance must be purchased while still in Brazil, online, from insurance companies or online comparators (such as Seguros Promo, SulAmérica, Assist Card). Just search for "Europe Travel Insurance" or "Schengen", guaranteeing a minimum coverage of 30,000 euros for medical expenses and repatriation. Print the policy and take it with you.

Financial proof is provided at the time of immigration. The required amounts are: 32.50 euros/day (if you have a host certificate from a family member/friend), 65 euros/day (with a printed hotel reservation) or 120 euros/day (without proof of accommodation). You can prove this by presenting cash (euros) or a physical international credit card, accompanied by a recent statement or banking app showing the available limit. Furthermore, from the end of 2026, Europe will implement ETIAS, an electronic travel authorization that will cost around 7 euros and will be requested online before boarding, functioning as a quick security check, similar to the United States system.

FAQ: Frequently Asked Questions about the exemption

1. Can I enter French Guiana only with my ID?
No. The passport remains the mandatory travel document. It must have been issued less than 10 years ago and be valid for at least three months after the expected date of your return to Brazil.

2. I'm going for work or to sell products. Do I need a visa?
Yes. The short-stay visa exemption does not apply to commercial activities, paid work, studies, or residency. In these cases, the appropriate visa must be applied for at the Embassy or Consulate of France before the trip.

3. I'm crossing with my own car. What changes?
Vehicle rules remain strict. You must present a valid driver's license, the car's document in the driver's name, and international car insurance. If you don't have one, you can purchase temporary insurance at French customs (Douanes), which costs from 95 euros for 15 days.

4. How long can I stay without a visa?
The maximum limit is 30 consecutive days within a total period of 180 days. Exceeding this period constitutes illegal stay in French territory.
